Mathematical Schema
Conceptual Understanding
Schemas are neural networks - our brain’s way of organizing our thoughts and experiences. The puzzles, activities, problem solving, and discussions in the ST Math Summer Immersion program support students in revising, extending and building new schema around mathematics concepts. View this video to learn more about schema.

The perception-action cycle is the continuous flow of information and action between the brain and the world around it. On and on it goes: sense, predict, act, adjust, sense, predict, act, adjust. This cycle is the foundation of our award-winning ST Math program. Check out this video to learn more about the perception-action cycle and ST Math.

Effective Facilitation Strategies
An asset-based approach focuses on the student’s strengths and talents instead of their deficits which is crucial to bringing equity in education. Math is from everywhere, in everything, and for everyone. ST Math Summer Immersion uses an asset-based approach to instruction through diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The facilitation of Puzzle Talks has been intentionally designed to develop students’ identity and agency as math thinkers. The Immersion Lesson plans include guidance and some great tips for leading an effective Puzzle Talk. For facilitation to be effective we must purposefully plan the types of questions we are going to ask ahead of time.

The use of Instructional Stations in the classroom provides a great learning model to engage students in collaborative learning, build student agency and accountability, and to provide opportunities for personalized instruction. ST Math Summer Immersion engages students in four instructional stations as part of the curriculum.

ST Math Summer Immersion offers optional assessments: a pre- & post-assessment to use in the first and last module; weekly pre- & post-quizzes for the first and last day of each module. These assessments monitor student progress and inform instructional decisions. Your team decides whether to administer these assessments and how to use the results.

Monitoring Learning Growth
One way that ST Math Immersion helps students build strong schema around mathematics, as they also develop perseverance, confidence, and agency, is with the Problem Solving Journal. The Journal serves as a student portfolio - a compilation of the academic work completed during the program including: My Thinking Path, Problem of the Day, Exit Ticket, and ST Math Puzzle Reflections.

ST Math Immersion concludes its program with the Learning Showcase and Celebration. The purpose is to provide students an opportunity to show what they know. It is a great way to show-off all the information students have learned during ST Math Immersion by extending an invitation to families, community members, district leaders, teachers, peers and school board members to celebrate and hear from students.
Here are just a few of the resources provided for the Learning Showcase and Celebration. Click on each for a closer look.
