This week students will solve problems involving partitioning a whole into equal sections (fractions).

Students use their understanding of fair sharing whole numbers into equal groups to partition one whole into equal fractional sections. Students partition a whole into halves, thirds, fourths, and eighths. They understand that a fraction 1/b is the quantity formed by 1 part of a whole partitioned into b equal parts. Students work with puzzles involving selecting a fractions of size 1/b to create a fraction a/b .
