Step 1 - Ask

THINKING ABOUT THE PROJECT

During Camp Game Design, students will be designing a math game. Engineers ask questions about what they want to design. Students will also need to think about their design! Questions to consider:

  • What type of game do I want to design?
  • Who will be playing the game?
  • What are the requirements of the game?
  • What is my goal?

EXPLORING WHAT YOU KNOW

Students need to think about the different types of games they played and who the games were designed for. What are some ways they can incorporate the different aspects of other familiar games to create a unique game? What materials do they have to make the game?

Step 3- Imagine

BRAINSTORMING MATH GAME IDEAS

As a team, students come together to brainstorm ideas for designing and developing a game. Every member should have an opportunity to share and build on others' ideas. Teamwork is key to a good design, so stay focused on the task at hand. Consider math areas that might be challenging for you and others, as well as areas you'd like to improve.

DISCUSSING WHAT YOU WHAT TO DESIGN

Once everyone in the group has shared, students take their ideas and combine them to make one big idea.

Step 5 - Create

CONSTRUCTING WHAT YOU WANT TO SEE

Using their plans, students build games and make their ideas real! This is the time to be creative, students should use their imagination and construct a math game.

Step 6 - Test

EVALUATING THE GAME

Once students have built their first model, they need to test it and observe how it works. Students should get feedback from other classmates using the Game Tester Report in the Mini-Game Design Booklet. Using the information they learned from their classmates to decide what works and what they need to revise.

REVIEWING THE FEEDBACK

Students discuss how they could improve their design and then make the changes needed. Repeat steps 6 and 7 until you are satisfied with your design.

Don't Forget to Celebrate!

Creating a positive experience for students as they engage in learning math is essential, and celebrating their achievements plays a vital role in achieving this goal.

The Celebration Guide outlines the importance of celebration as an integral piece of ST Math Camp. It also highlights several ideas and tips for successful, authentic student-celebration.
