Getting Started with ST Math Homeschool

ST Math is a PreK-8 visual instructional program that leverages the brain's innate spatial-temporal* reasoning ability to solve mathematical problems.

Created over 20 years ago by MIND Research Institute, a nonprofit social impact organization specializing in neuroscience and education research, ST Math presents students with challenging puzzles, non-routine problem solving, and informative feedback.

The neuroscientists, mathematicians, and educators who created ST Math harnessed the power of games to allow all students to succeed in math and develop perseverance and problem-solving skills.

Through independent, third-party validations as well as annual, transparent evaluations of results of all ST Math school cohorts, the careful use of language, scaffolding of content, and immediate informative feedback has been shown to repeatedly double or triple growth in math proficiency.

*Spatial-temporal -- the ST in ST Math -- is the innate ability to visualize and manipulate images through time and space

MIND Research Institute, the non-profit that created ST Math, cares deeply about changing the way people feel about math.

Students are assigned a grade level curriculum that is presented as a Journey. The Journey is made up of a series of Objectives that present a carefully designed series of grade-level math concepts.

An Objective consists of a number of games, each of which has levels that are a collection of related puzzles. Objectives in grades 2 and above begin and end with a quiz that looks like math assessment questions.

Assignments allow you to personalize instruction for each student. Whether you are looking to provide remediation or extensions, with Assignments you can get students working on Objectives from any grade level (pre-k to 8th). And since Objectives don't display the grade level, students will only know they're playing games that are just hard enough for them.

As soon as an Objective is assigned, the icon (the house) becomes clickable. The student experience depends on how you want them to work through the assigned Objectives. You'll find it's very flexible and will help you meet your instructional goals.

Remember that the Journey (the map) is a student's path through grade-level curriculum. It ensures that students play the content that will help them grow the most and keep them intrinsically motivated to work through grade-level curriculum. You cannot reorder the Journey but you can use Assignments to personalize your students' or class's instructional path.

To assign an Objective, go to the Curriculum dropdown, choose All Learning Objectives, and go to the grade level. Choose the Objective and then click on Assign this Objective. Selelct the student you want to assign the Objective to.
